Episode 130: Magnesium for the ADHD Brain

This episode highlights the emerging research suggesting a strong link between magnesium levels and cognitive function, particularly in attention-related disorders like ADHD. Low magnesium levels have been found to impact focus, learning abilities, and impulse control in both children and adults.

As a crucial mineral, magnesium plays a significant role in various physiological and neurological processes, making it an essential consideration in addressing attention and focus challenges. I emphasized the need for broader dissemination of this information, suggesting that magnesium levels should be routinely checked in individuals with ADHD.

Additionally, I discussed natural strategies such as proper nutrition and physical exercise for neurotransmitter regulation, alongside the benefits of magnesium supplementation, particularly in the form of magnesium threonate and glycinate.

Clinical evidence supports the effectiveness of magnesium in reducing ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity, as well as improving sleep quality and emotional regulation.

Moreover, magnesium is highlighted for its positive impact on brain function and learning through its regulation of essential brain chemicals, support of synaptic plasticity, and influence on brainwave communication. The text encourages seeking professional guidance and staying informed about magnesium supplementation for enhancing mental health and addressing ADHD symptoms.

Episode 120: Behavioral Interventions for ADHD

Parents face challenges in managing ADHD, which is why effective behavioral interventions are essential. In this podcast, I emphasized the necessity of taking action and provided insights into various interventions for ADHD, including behavioral, self-management, social skills, and sensory processing interventions.

Behavioral interventions focus on understanding and modifying negative behaviors associated with ADHD, aiming to improve self-regulation and overall functioning. Parental support and training are crucial for effectively implementing these strategies at home.

Self-management interventions aim to develop executive functioning skills and promote effective self-regulation and planning, which are necessary for children with ADHD. Social skills interventions emphasize the importance of fostering social and emotional development alongside academics, assisting children in developing strong social bonds and communication skills.

Sensory processing interventions, such as movement breaks and sensory tools, help regulate the nervous system and improve attention for individuals with ADHD and sensory processing issues.

Episode 82: Why ADHD Kids Can’t Get Anything Done

In this ADHD podcast, I stressed the importance of patience, consistent reinforcement, mindfulness, and relaxation practices to promote mental well-being and improve learning. I also suggested exploring additional resources for further information on behavioral interventions.

Listen in and learn about the challenges faced by children with ADHD in completing tasks due to issues with executive functioning, impulse control, and self-regulation. Understanding these challenges and consistently implementing strategies to support positive behavioral changes is crucial.

There are solutions for this, such as QEEG brain mapping to identify treatment options and resources, including neurofeedback as a safe alternative to medication. Parents should practice empathy and recognize that children with ADHD may lack skills and reinforcement rather than purposely avoiding tasks.

Episode 77: Neurofeedback for ADHD

Explore the potential of neurofeedback as a transformative intervention for children diagnosed with ADHD. Neurofeedback seeks to understand the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD, emphasizing the variability in symptom presentation across individuals along a continuum of inattention, impulsivity, and mood dysregulation.

Through QEEG brain mapping, dysregulation in the brains can be observed in ADHD. It provides insights crucial for diagnostic and treatment purposes, particularly in the context of neurofeedback protocols. Neurofeedback is a straightforward yet powerful approach to reinforcing adaptive brainwave patterns for improved cognitive function and emotional regulation.

Moreover, the therapeutic benefits of neurofeedback lie not only in mitigating symptoms of ADHD but also in aiding individuals grappling with past trauma, facilitating a holistic journey toward enhanced well-being and resilience.

Neurofeedback is endorsed by esteemed medical bodies like the American Pediatric Association, putting it on the frontline as a viable alternative to medication. Along with parental support and patience, consistent neurofeedback sessions may provide transformative effects and longer-lasting benefits far beyond the temporary relief offered by conventional medicines.

Episode 76: Calming the Dysregulated ADHD Brain with Kate Coffey, LCSW

I invited a colleague, Dr. Kate Coffey, to explore strategies for calming the dysregulated ADHD brain. We discussed the manifestations of dysregulation in children with ADHD, covering both under-stimulated and overstimulated behaviors that may not align with situational demands.

As we challenged the notion of medication as the sole solution for ADHD, we advocated for natural approaches such as diet, lifestyle adjustments, and various therapies, including neurofeedback. We also highlighted the significance of QEEG brain mapping in diagnosing underlying neurological markers and guiding personalized interventions, particularly for “twice-exceptional” children who exhibit giftedness alongside developmental challenges.

Alternative therapies offer a gradual process of healing and growth alongside modalities like somatic experiences and PEMF therapy for regulating emotions and thoughts. Parental self-care is also necessary for supporting dysregulated children, so we recommended mindfulness practices and establishing a solid support network.
