298: How to Increase Self-Control in Children – Simple Strategies That Work

Learn why kids struggle with self-control and how to support them using everyday tools that nurture emotional regulation, patience, and better decision-making over time.

Children often struggle with self-control not because they lack discipline, but because their developing brains and nervous systems are still learning how to manage impulses, emotions, and frustration. That's why it's tough for them to pause and make thoughtful decisions. It thus becomes a mission for us parents to help them increase self-control by providing the right tools, structure, and support.

I'm excited to equip you with solutions that will help you empower your children to develop their self-control in a way that feels natural and achievable. By incorporating simple yet powerful approaches into daily life, you can create an environment that supports their ability to pause, think, and make better choices.

Strengthening Self-Control Through Brain-Building Activities

I love talking about self-control because it works like a muscle—the more we use it, the stronger it gets! And the best part? We can help our kids develop self-control in simple, fun, and natural ways that fit right into daily life. Many children lack self-control not because they don’t want to behave, but because they have poor self-regulation skills that make it harder for them to manage impulses and emotions. By using the right tools and approaches, we can promote self-control and set them up for long-term success.

When kids struggle with poor self-control, it’s not a reflection of their character—it’s a skill that can be strengthened with the right support! One of the most powerful ways to boost self-control is by strengthening the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and impulse control. We can do this in simple but fun brain-building activities like memory games, puzzles, board games, and strategy-based activities like Legos. Coding challenges, crafting, and even classic card games all help kids become creative problem solvers.

The key is to make it playful and engaging so your child actually enjoys the process. When you join in, you’re not just building their brain, you’re strengthening your bond and creating lasting memories. I love encouraging parents to try these strategies because small, consistent efforts can lead to big changes in self-control and overall regulation.

Delaying Gratification and Building Patience

Teaching kids to delay gratification is a powerful way to build self-control and patience. Nowadays, however, patience is something that many kids struggle with since everything is so fast-paced. But, as parents, we can help increase self-control in children through small, everyday challenges.Research, like the famous Marshmallow Test, shows that kids who learn to wait for a bigger reward tend to be more regulated and happier.

We can reinforce this by offering choices, such as, “Do you want a small snack now, or a bigger one in 10 minutes?” I do this all the time with my own kids, and it’s amazing to see how often they choose to wait. The goal is to make delayed gratification a normal part of life in a way that feels natural and positive.

Kids don’t need everything instantly, and we don’t have to force patience on them. Instead, we can guide them with small, practical choices that strengthen their ability to wait, leading to better self-control and resilience over time.

Regulating the Nervous System for Better Self-Control

Everything starts with regulating the nervous system, which is why it is essential for building self-control. When a child is dysregulated, their brain is in high-alert mode, making it nearly impossible to manage impulses, problem-solve, or practice patience. Self-control isn’t just about willpower—it’s about creating the right conditions in the body and brain to support better decision-making.

To help with this, we need both physical and behavioral tools. Deep breathing, movement breaks, PEMF, and magnesium are all great ways to reset the nervous system. But kids also need strategies they can use anytime, like mindful breathing, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, or simple meditation exercises.

The key is weaving these practices into daily life and showing our kids how it’s done. When they see us using these tools—taking a deep breath when we're stressed, stretching after sitting too long, or doing a quick mindfulness reset—they’re way more likely to follow along. Life will always throw challenges our way, but when we teach kids how to regulate their nervous system now, we’re giving them a superpower for self-control and emotional resilience that will serve them for a lifetime.

Creating a Self-Regulation Toolkit

Creating a self-regulation toolkit is a game-changer for helping kids build self-control. This isn’t about punishment—it’s about having a go-to space where anyone in the family can reset and recharge. A cozy calm-down corner with noise-canceling headphones, binaural beats, Play-Doh, a weighted blanket, or anything else that helps soothe the nervous system can make a huge difference.

The magic happens when we normalize using it. When kids see us using these tools, they realize self-regulation isn’t just for them—it’s a lifelong skill. The great thing about this is that everyone benefits from a more regulated nervous system. Now that’s a win-win!

Reducing Screen Time for Better Self-Control

Reducing screen time is also a powerful way to improve self-control. Screens flood the brain with dopamine, making it harder for kids to manage impulses, be patient, and enjoy quiet moments without constant stimulation. Instead of relying on devices, we want to swap screen-heavy activities for real-world experiences that build problem-solving skills and help kids slow down.

Hobbies are a fantastic way to do this, but they have become a bit of a lost art. While sports are great, kids also need time for hands-on activities like crafting, robotics, music, or even classic games like bocce. Just ask my Grandpa Tony, whose lifelong love for the game has kept him active, connected, and full of joy well into his 80s. When kids develop a hobby they love, it is something they can carry with them for life.Kids will definitely resist these changes but that is okay because struggle is part of the learning process. The key is consistency, playfulness, and setting firm but loving boundaries. Instead of making screen time rules feel like a punishment, bring some lightheartedness into it.

Most importantly, reinforce their efforts, not just the outcome. Recognize when they are trying, even if it is just a small step. And remember, self-control is a learned skill. These changes do not happen overnight, but with consistency and a little fun, you will help your child build stronger impulse control and maybe even find a new favorite hobby along the way.
