Phobia Treatments

Why Do People Develop Phobias?

TA phobia is an excessive and irrational fear reaction. Genetic and environmental factors can cause phobias. For example, a prior trauma or frightening experience can bring on a phobia. If you have this kind of reaction, you may have experienced anxiety or panic when you encountered the source of your fear. Fears can consist of certain places, actions, situations, or objects.

Unlike general anxiety disorders, a phobia is usually connected to something very specific (e.g., bridges, dogs, etc). People with phobias often realize their fear is irrational, but they’re unable to control it. Such fears can interfere with work, school, and relationships.

How Can Neurofeedback Help?

Individuals with phobias often display overactivity in their brainwave functioning. They are especially prone to overthinking or repetitive thinking that results in a looping pattern in their brain wave functioning (hyper coherence). Neurofeedback reduces these overactive brain waves to help retrain the brain and therefore reduce symptoms of anxiety.

How Can Biofeedback Help?

For those with anxiety, their entire nervous system is overstimulated. This heightened arousal state can produce physical and emotional symptoms. Biofeedback is designed to help the Central Nervous System (CNS) calm down so one can self-regulate. When an individual participates in Biofeedback they will have more control of their CNS and not be as easily flooded with anxious feelings and panic.

How Can Counseling Help?

We marry neuroscience with evidence-based holistic therapies. Phobias are often deep rooted in the subconscious and therefore not as responsive to traditional talk therapy. We combine psychotherapy with effective techniques that directly impact the subconscious coupled with gradual exposures. We use Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) to help clients break the phobia cycle.
