What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive form of treatment involving the study of brainwave (neuro) information (feedback) and reinforcing change.* This therapy causes the brain to regulate itself, calming the nervous system and diminishing symptoms. Central nervous problems such as anxiety, depression, and even physical issues can arise when this self-regulation does not occur. Unlike Biofeedback, Neurofeedback focuses on the autonomic functions rather than the bodily.

What is Biofeedback?

The process of learning to control and regulate one’s bodily functions, ranging from breathing to heart rate and skin temperature, is Biofeedback. In this therapy patients are connected to electrical sensors that provide information (feedback) regarding the body (bio) allowing you to record and learn to control subtle changes. For example, this therapy can help you to relax muscles or reduce stress. This is unlike neurofeedback which regards autonomic functions. Learning to control one’s own body through Biofeedback can greatly improve one’s health.*

What is QEEG?

QEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalogram. This is a brain map created via measuring electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp which reflects cortical activity. Quantitative EEG means a computer analyzed the raw data provided by the brain map. Other people’s previous EEG data provide a reference database which new results are then compared to. Using this comparison the patterns of this brain map can be interpreted to aid in treatment planning and progress. Some things that EEG can identify are patterns that could indicate depression, anxiety, and more.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is a way by which a person learns how to modify their own brainwaves. We show clients how their brain is functioning with the use of sophisticated computers. We then teach them how control their brain by promoting or reducing certain brain wave frequencies. We then use a process of reinforcement to reward the brain for these changes and the production of more appropriate patterns. This causes the brain to actually produce different electrical activity and thus brainwaves are shaped to produce more desirable and regulated performance. This self-regulation reduces symptoms.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We begin our process with a QEEG brain map. This collects data on your EEG activity so that it can be analyzed to help determine the best treatment plan. Dr. Roseann will go over this personally and meet with you to develop a treatment plan. The Neurofeedback session will begin immediately after a plan has been developed. The exact number of sessions varies from individual to individual. On the low end there can be as few as 20, but on the high end there can be 100 or more.* Weston patients generally come in twice a week. During each session we will place sensors on your scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

The therapy and or therapies will be determined by this combination of QEEG results and clinical intake. We are proud to provide Weston with these therapy alternatives.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

There are 3 ways in which we monitor progress:

  • With regularly scheduled QEEGs to analyze brain function with objective tools.
  •  With the data we collect at each Neurofeedback session.
  • With symptom checklist progress monitoring that has been customized around you.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Yes. Thousands of research studies have supported its efficacy in over 40 plus years. It is a safe, and drug-free alternative treatment for many children and adults dealing with certain conditions. It even received a Level 1 effectiveness rating in 2013 for its effects treating ADHD. A Level 1 effectiveness rating means it is just as effective as medication.*
