What is Neurofeedback?

The brain has an amazing ability to self-regulate. It does this in order to relax the nervous system and relieve symptoms, Without this self-regulation, anxiety, depression, and other physical symptoms can surface. Neurofeedback is a safe, alternative form of treatment in which the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) is studied and changes are reinforced.* Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback by focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback differs from neurofeedback. Instead of controlling brainwaves, it controls autonomic functions. By using biofeedback, a person can learn to control their breath, heart rate, skin temperature, and other functions related to the body. Our practice uses electrical sensors in order to measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). We can record the results, which allows the patient to learn to control small changes, which might include relaxing muscles or reducing stress. To have power over your body means you can begin to improve your health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. This EEG data is compared to a reference database featuring a standard set of data by other people’s EEGs. This allows us to compare the information and identify specific patterns, which can sometimes be a sign of depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

By using Neurofeedback, individuals can learn how to change their own brainwave activity. Our office can monitor brain functioning using computers, showing that feedback to the client in real time. We help our patients train themselves in the skills needed to utilize different brainwave frequencies, then reward the brain for changing its own activity. This results in the brain’s ability to produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, new electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into a more desirable, more regulated performance. The brain learns to self-regulate, resulting in reduced symptoms.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Firstly, we conduct a non-invasive procedure called an QEEG Brain Map during which EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. You then meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and create a treatment plan. You can begin your Neurofeedback sessions as soon as a protocol has been established. During each treatment session, sensors are placed on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. The number of sessions required, which can range from 20 to 100 or more, varies based on each individual.*  Most individuals from Westchester County visit our office for two appointments per week.
