What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is safe and non-invasive treatment option that includes studying your brainwaves (neuro) and analyzing the information they provide (feedback) and then reinforcing positive changes.* Through self-regulation the brain can calm the nervous system, leading to a diminishment of symptoms. Without that regulation, a variety of central nervous problems can occur, such as depression, anxiety, or even physical symptoms. A bit different than Neurofeedback, Biofeedback specifically targets autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback utilizes a person’s bodily functions like heart rate, breath, or skin temperature, and attempts to consciously control them as a form of therapy. We connect patients to electrical sensors and monitor their body (bio) and receive information (feedback) that is used to record and learn to control subtle changes that can reduce stress and relax muscles. Biofeedback, unlike Neurofeedback, focuses specifically on controlling one’s autonomic functions. Improvement to overall health can be facilitated through control over the body.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) is essentially a map of the brain that records electrical patterns based on cortical activity on the surface of the scalp. When EEG data is computer analyzed, we call it a quantitative EEG. Your own EEG data will be compared to a standard set in a reference database based on other’s EEGs. Depression, anxiety, and other disorders can all be indicated by the patterns observed in these maps. Both treatment planning and progress will utilize your QEEG.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is all about teaching yourself to regulate your own brainwave activities. Through the use of computers, we show live feedback to our clients as we monitor brain functions. We reward the brain as we utilize this feedback to promote or reduce different brain waves frequencies to train the brain to monitor its own activity and produce more appropriate patterns. As the brainwave activity is “shaped” into more regulated and desirable performance, the reinforcement actually produces new electrical activity in the brain. These changes in activity often lead to symptom reduction as the brain teaches itself to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first thing we would do is perform a QEEG Brain Map, a safe procedure that records and statistically analyzes your EEG activity. Dr. Roseann will meet with you to review your brain map together and discuss the best treatment plan for you. Once that protocol is developed, you can start in on your Neurofeedback sessions immediately. The optimal quantity of sessions will vary depending on the individual, but can often range somewhere between 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most of our patients in the Washington area will visit our offices twice a week. When you attend a session, we will provide brainwave reinforcement as we monitor your brain’s activity through sensors on the scalp and ears, all while watching a movie.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor progress in three distinct ways:

  • Through Neurofeedback sessions and the data collected from them.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe alternative to surgical and pharmaceutical treatments for a variety conditions affecting children, adolescents, and adults. This alternative treatment has been validated and has been shown to be effective by thousands of research studies over the past 40+ years. The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating—the same effectiveness as pharmaceutical treatment*—in the treatment of ADHD in 2013.*
