What is Neurofeedback?

The non-invasive and safe form of treatment e that studies the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforces the change is Neurofeedback* The brain self-regulates to calm the nervous system in order to finish symptoms. Without this self-regulation, Central nervous problems can arise – anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. Neurofeedback differs from Biofeedback by not focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of Learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. By connecting patients to electrical sensors, we are able to measure and receive information (feedback) about the body (bio). You can record and learn to control minute changes like reducing stress or relaxing muscles with the information this provides. It differs from neurofeedback because it is the control of one’s autonomic functions. Power over one’s body can lead to a healthier you.*

What is QEEG?

The measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity is a QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map. A computer analysis of the EEG information is a quantitative EEG. Other people’s EEGs set a standard base in which your EEG data is compared. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and several other conditions. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

A person can learn to adjust their own brainwave activity through Neurofeedback. Through the use of computers, we monitor brain functions and show that live feedback to the client. We then teach them ways to support or reduce different brain wave frequencies. We then reward the brain for changing its own patterns to prompt more appropriate activities.  New electrical activity can actually be produced in the brain with this reinforcement. The brainwave activity is then “shaped” toward a more preferable, more regulated performance. These changes result in symptom decline, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We start by running a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is acknowledged and statistically analyzed. You will then meet with Dr. Roseann to make a treatment plan and review your brain map. You can begin your Neurofeedback sessions as soon as you like after a protocol has been designed by you and Dr. Roseann. Solely based on the individual, the number of sessions required vary, usually ranging from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*   A session involves placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. Most individuals from Trumbull come in two times per week.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor progress in three ways:

  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is great for several conditions affecting children and adults as a drug-free and safe treatment alternative. In the past 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies supporting its effectiveness. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
