What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of treatment of studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change that is safe and non-invasive.* The brain then self-regulates to calm the nervous system in order to reduce symptoms. Without this self-regulation, central nervous problems can arise – anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms are common.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. The patient is connected to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). This allows you to recognize and learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Power over one’s body can lead to an improvement of health.* It differs from neurofeedback because it is the control of one’s autonomic functions.

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A computer analysis of the EEG data is known as a quantitative EEG. A reference database of a standard set by other people’s EEG is used to compare your EEG data. Specific patterns can be indicative of depression, anxiety and many other conditions. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

We monitor brain functioning and show that live feedback to the client through the use of computers. Neurofeedback involves assisting in a person learning how to modify their own brainwave activity. We train them to reduce or promote different brain wave frequencies, then we reward the brain for changing its own pattern to produce more appropriate activities. New electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” toward a more suitable, more regulated performance through this reinforcement. As the brain learns to self-regulate.These changes result in symptom reduction.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The beginning involves conducting a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. Next, you meet with Dr. Roseann to make a treatment plan after reviewing your brain map. You can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions after a protocol has been designed.  The number of sessions required vary person to person, but typically range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*  Most individuals from Torrington come in two times per week. Placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie is what you can expect in a session.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

Dr. Roseann will sit down with you and review your results and make treatment recommendations after a QEEG. Based on your QEEG results and clinical intake, she will decide which approach of therapy would be best. We proudly serve Torrington residents with these alternative therapies.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor progress in three ways:

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Thousands of research studies support its effectiveness over the past 40 plus years. Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free treatment alternative for many conditions affecting adults and children. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
