What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is he non-invasive and safe form of treatment that studies the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforces the change. * The brain self-regulates to relax the nervous system in order to finish symptoms. Anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms are central nervous system problems that can arise without this self-regulation. Neurofeedback differs from Biofeedback by not focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of Learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. Patients are connected to electrical sensors, allowing us to be able to measure and receive information (feedback) about the body (bio). You can recognize and learn to control tiny changes like reducing stress or relaxing muscles with the information from biofeedback. It differs from neurofeedback because it is the control of one’s autonomic functions. Power over one’s body can lead to a healthier you.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A computer analysis of the EEG information is a quantitative EEG. Your EEG data is compared other people’s EEGs that have set a standard base of comparison. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and several other conditions. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback can teach a person to learn to adjust their own brainwave activity. We show live feedback to the client through the use of computers, where we monitor brain functions. We then teach them ways to support or diminish different brainwave frequencies. Then, we reward the brain for changing its own patterns to elicit more appropriate activities.  With this reinforcement, new electrical activity can actually be produced in the brain. The brainwave activity is then “shaped” toward a more preferable, more controlled performance. These changes result in symptom degeneration, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We start by running a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is logged and statistically analyzed. You will then meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and make a treatment plan. Immediately, you can begin your Neurofeedback sessions after a protocol has been designed by you and Dr. Roseann. The number of sessions required vary, usually ranging from 20 to 100 or more sessions and they’re solely based on the individual.*  Most individuals from Stratford come in two times per week. A session involves placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

In the past 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies supporting the effectiveness of Neurofeedback. It is great for several conditions affecting children and adults as a drug-free and safe treatment alternative.. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
