What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of treatment that is  non-invasive and safe that studies the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforces the change* The brain self-regulates to calm the nervous system in order to finish symptoms. Central nervous problems can arise – anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms, without this self-regulation. Neurofeedback differs from Biofeedback by not focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature is the process of Biofeedback. By connecting patients to electrical sensors, we are able to measure and receive information (feedback) about the body (bio). Given this information, you can record and learn to control minute changes like reducing stress or relaxing muscles. It differs from neurofeedback because it is the control of one’s autonomic functions. Power over one’s body can lead to a healthier you.*

What is QEEG?

The measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity is a QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG information. Other people’s EEGs set a standard base in which this EEG data is compared. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and several other conditions. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback helps to guide a person to learn how to adjust their own brainwave activity. We monitor brain functions through the use of computers and show that live feedback to the client. We then show them ways to encourage or reduce different brain wave frequencies. After that, we reward the brain for changing its own activity to prompt more appropriate patterns.  This reinforcement allows new electrical activity to actually be produced in the brain. The brainwave activity is then “shaped” toward a more preferable, more regulated performance. These changes result in symptom decline, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We start by running a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is documented and statistically analyzed. Dr. Roseann will then meet with you to make a treatment plan and review your brain map. You can begin your Neurofeedback sessions immediately after a protocol has been designed by you and Dr. Roseann The number of sessions required vary based on each individual, usually ranging from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*   A session involves placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. Most individuals from Southington come in two times per week.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

In the past 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies supporting its usefulness.
