What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive and safe form of treatment that studies the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* in order to finish symptoms, the brain self-regulates to calm the nervous system. Without this self-regulation, central nervous problems can arise – anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback by focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. By connecting patients to electrical sensors, we can measure and receive information (feedback) about the body (bio). With this information, you can record and learn to control small changes like reducing stress or relaxing muscles. It differs from neurofeedback because it is the control of one’s autonomic functions. Power over one’s body can lead to a healthier you.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A computer analysis of the EEG information is a a quantitative EEG. Other people’s EEGs set a standard base in which this EEG data is compared. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback aids in teaching a person to learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. We monitor brain functions through the use of computers and show that live feedback to the client. We teach them to encourage or reduce different brain wave frequencies. We then reward the brain for changing its own activity to elicit more appropriate patterns.  New electrical activity is actually produced in the brain through this reinforcement. The brainwave activity is then “shaped” toward a more preferable, more regulated performance. These changes result in symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We begin by conducting a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. Dr. Roseann will then meet with you to review your brain map and make a treatment plan. You can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions after a protocol has been designed. Ranging from 20 to 100 or more sessions, The number of sessions required vary based on each individual.*  Most individuals from Southbury come in two times per week. A session involves placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.

  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free treatment alternative for several conditions affecting children and adults. In the past 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies supporting its efficacy. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
