What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback treatment is a safe, non-invasive treatment that includes studying information (feedback) or brainwaves (neuro) and trying to reinforce change.* On a regular basis, our brains will self-regulate to help diminish any symptoms and calm the nervous system. Without the ability to self-regulate, central nervous problems can occur such as anxiety, depression or even physical. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback because it focuses on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback therapy involves learning to control your senses such as heart rate, breath, and skin temperature. With the electrical sensors that are connected to the patient, we are able to study information (feedback) provided by the body (bio). This will allow them to record and learn to control small changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. When you have power over your body, you’ll be able to live an improved state of health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (Quantitative electroencephalogram) is a brain map that measures the patient’s electrical patterns on the scalp where cortical activity is reflected. A quantitative EEG is actually a computer analysis of EEG data. With this data, we will compare it to a database set in order to find certain patterns that correlate to medical conditions like depression or anxiety. QEEG can be used for processes such as treatment progress and treatment planning.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback involves helping a person learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. Through the use of computers, we monitor brain functioning and show that live feedback to the client. We train them to promote or reduce different brain wave frequencies, then we reward the brain for changing its own activity to produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, new electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” toward a more desirable, more regulated performance. These changes result in symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step involves conducting a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. You then meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and make a treatment plan. After a protocol has been designed, you can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions.  The number of sessions required vary based on each individual, but range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*  Most individuals from Seymour come in two times per week. A session involves placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor progress in three ways :

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free treatment alternative for many conditions affecting children and adults. There have been thousands of research studies supporting its efficacy during the past 40 plus years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
