What is Neurofeedback?

In order to relax the nervous system and relieve symptoms, the brain self-regulates. Without this self-regulation, anxiety, depression, and other physical symptoms can surface. Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive form of treatment of studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback by focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback differs from neurofeedback in that it controls one’s autonomic functions rather than brain waves. By using biofeedback, one can learn to control their breath, heart rate, skin temperature, or other bodily functions. We use electrical sensors in order to measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). We can record the results, thus allowing the patient to learn to control subtle changes. These changes might include relaxing muscles or reducing stress. To have power over your body means you can begin to improve your health.*.

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. This EEG data is compared to a database of a standard set by other people’s EEG so that we can use that database as a reference. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

By using Neurofeedback, individuals can learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. Our office an monitor brain functioning using computers, showing that feedback to the client in real time. We help our patients learn the skills needed to promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies and reward the brain for changing its own activity. This results in the brain’s ability to produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, new electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into a more desirable, more regulated performance. The brain learns to self-regulate, resulting in reduced symptoms.* How Do I know which therapy I need?

After a QEEG, Dr. Roseann will review your results in person and make recommendations for treatment based on your QEEG results and clinical intake. She designs customized treatments personally suited for each of patients. No one solution applies to every situation, so an in-depth review of the test results is necessary for every patient. The most appropriate therapies will be suggested. We proudly serve Putnam County residents with these alternative therapies.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step involves conducting a QEEG Brain Map—a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. You then meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and create a treatment plan. Once a protocol has been developed, you can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions. In these sessions, sensors will be placed on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. The number of sessions required varies based on each individual, but range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*  Most individuals from Putnam County visit our office for two appointments per week.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Thousands of research studies supporting the efficacy of this alternative treatment have been published during the past 40+ years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating—the same effectiveness as pharmaceutical treatment*—in the treatment of ADHD.*
