Episode 7: What to Say to a Teacher When They Tell You to Medicate Your Kid

Having someone to discuss about treating a child’s mental health and that there are other solutions besides medication is important in our mission to change people’s mindsets especially on taking medications.

Just because the teacher tells you to have your child medicated, doesn’t mean you should. Today, we’re going to find out exactly what happened in Gayle’s encounter with a teacher who advised her to medicate her children.

What were the symptoms that prompted the teacher to advise taking medication?

The teacher who confronted Gayle about her child observed that the latter’s child was struggling with comprehension and focus. Although this was a common struggle for most young children, it was more on an unusual level of slow comprehension and inattentiveness for the part of Gayle’s child which made it a concerning matter.

However, the immediate solution given by the teacher was medication which should not be the first thing to consider because it is actually violative of state law and also because there are other alternatives that are safer, more natural, and proven to be effective.

Even a quick search on Google will give you a list of alternatives although you have to be careful in reading through various articles and websites as there are misinformative posts online which you may come across.

What made Gayle choose another solution besides medication?

Despite the teacher’s suggestion, Gayle opted to research more about her child’s case and educated herself about the root causes and treatments for her child’s mental health condition.

There are instances where even experts’ opinions are wrong which is why we shouldn’t take their words as gospels. Gayle compared her situation to someone with a blurry vision being told to rectify the problem by immediately going for a surgery which should be a last resort instead of the first.

We should always take into consideration the long term effects of these medications or other treatments as we’re talking about putting in foreign substances in our children’s throats or bodies. That’s a worrisome thought that’s why there’s a need to really understand their condition first before diving into that.

When you love yourself, that’s when the magic happens.

In our previous episodes, we’ve already established just how much of a game changer neurofeedback is especially when coupled with other supplementary activities and treatments.

Gayle’s child, Sophie, has thrived and responded remarkably and positively to her treatments. She’s been coming up with different things and even teaches her brother because she’s passionate about her experiences and changes.

Sophie’s confidence also improved and that’s a big deal because a child’s emotional core and how one feels about himself or herself is what makes one become successful not just in academics and work but also in terms of having relationships with other people and in setting boundaries with others.

The magic happens in the behaviors.

The key to attaining the behavioral changes we expect from our children is to regulate their nervous system and calm their brains down.

The process might make them uncomfortable but it’s perfectly normal. It is necessary that we don’t over or under stimulate their brains because it greatly affects brain functioning.

Mistakes are the best things to happen.

When Sophie’s brother Lance got his scores from the standardized tests that they applied for several times throughout the year, he was disheartened. Gayle, however, reminded him that mistakes are the best things to happen which is indeed true.

We shouldn’t treat mistakes as something bad but rather treat them as learning opportunities that shape us into being better. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t do well on your exams. At least, you already know what to work on in the future.

Perfection doesn’t exist so let’s eradicate that from our way of thinking. What’s important is that we learn from the mistakes that we make. We have to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves and our children in many aspects.

I think that’s what most people, especially parents, nowadays tend to forget – that these are just young children who don’t need to have so much pressure imposed upon them. That’s why there’s usually an unhealthy competition that exists. Instead, let’s lift each other up and help everybody exceed.

Surely, we all know how younger children always have all these questions inside their heads that they ask even at the most random time. Although, curiosity is an amazing thing which we should appreciate. We want our children to be curious because it leads them to trying things and trying things leads to critical thinkers.

Neurofeedback in itself is easy.

It’s been exponentially advantageous for Gayle’s children to have neurofeedback sessions. They’ve been thriving and enjoying life in a way that their parents never really imagined. According to Gayle, it’s mind blowing for them to witness their children’s progress.

Neurofeedback in itself is easy not just for your children but also for you and the whole family. Although time-limited, it’s safe and scientifically proven so there’s nothing to worry about.

If there’s one takeaway, it’s “Don’t start with medication.”

Getting the right kind of help is as important as learning about your child’s mental health issue. It doesn’t matter if it’s anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, depression, or others.

When you don’t get the right help, your child will most likely have secondary problems which will make it harder to treat considering its complex nature. So if there’s one takeaway from all these things, it’s going to be “Don’t start with medication.”

There are safer and natural solutions that are science-backed and effective as evidenced by thousands of research studies. And when you find one that’s working best for you or your child, be consistent with it.

Don’t expect a miracle to happen overnight. Consistency is key and when you start with one thing and stay consistent, that’s when the magic happens. You just have to trust the process.
