What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive form of treatment of studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* The brain self-regulates in order to relax the nervous system and relieve symptoms. Without this self-regulation, central nervous problems—including anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms—can arise. Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback by focusing on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback

Biofeedback is learning to control one’s breath, heart rate, skin temperature, or other bodily functions. It is different from neurofeedback as it controls one’s autonomic functions rather than brain waves. We connect patients to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio) in order to record the results, allowing the patient to learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Power over one’s body can lead to an improvement of health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflects cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. This EEG data is compared to a reference database of a standard set by other people’s EEG. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Why Dr. Roseann for Neuro & Biofeedback?

At the office of Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, Ed.D., LPC, BCN, we work with children, adolescents, teens, adults and families around a variety of issues with non-medication therapies. Our staff provides non-judgmental support to help alleviate stress and promote wellness.

Dr. Roseann is an experienced practitioner and, instead of outsourcing, interprets the QEEG data herself to ensure more accurate test studies. She designs customized treatments personally suited for each of patients. No one solution applies to every situation, so an in-depth review of the test results is necessary for every patient. From there, she designs custom treatments such as Neurofeedback, Advanced Bio-Regulation, and others based on the data to better help you.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback involves helping a person learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. We monitor brain functioning using computers and show that feedback to the client in real time. We train our patients to promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies, rewarding the brain for changing its own activity in order to produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, new electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into a more desirable, more regulated performance. The brain learns to self-regulate, resulting in a reduction of symptoms.* How Do I know which therapy I need?

After a QEEG, Dr. Roseann will review your results in person and make recommendations for treatment based on your QEEG results and clinical intake. The most appropriate therapies will be suggested. We proudly serve Oakville residents with these alternative therapies.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step involves conducting a QEEG Brain Map—a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. You then meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and design a treatment plan. Once a protocol has been developed, you can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions.  In these sessions, sensors will be placed on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. The number of sessions required varies based on each individual, but range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.*  Most individuals from Oakville visit our office for two appointments per week.

We deeply care about our Bethel residents and proudly provide our non-medication therapies.

  • Through data collection at each Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular, customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free alternative treatment for a variety of conditions affecting children and adults.
