What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is the process of analyzing the information (feedback) sent by the brainwaves (neuro) and using this data to reinforce positive changes. It is both non-invasive and safe. Since it is the brain’s duty to self-regulate the nervous system to calm and lessen symptoms, a lack of this self-regulation can cause issues within the central nervous system. Depression, anxiety and even physical symptoms can arise if the brain cannot self-regulate.*

What is Biofeedback?

Unlike Neurofeedback, Biofeedback focuses on autonomic functions of the body. Learning to control bodily functions such as skin temperature, and heart rate is the aim of Biofeedback. Electrical sensors are placed onto patients to gather data (feedback) about the body (bio). Dr. Roseann pays attention to the small changes, with the intention of you learning to control the subtle contractions and relaxations of your muscles. Taking back your body can improve your health state*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) Brain Map is the measured electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. The EEG data is compared against a large database of other EEG results. Some patterns are associated with depression, another may be anxiety, and so on. A QEEG is the first step in a treatment plan and assists in the process of overcoming your condition.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is the process of helping you change your brainwave activity for the better. Through technology, we observe brainwaves and functions that give feedback of data back to the patient.Through light discipline, the patient is able to “shape” the brain activity by rewarding positive changes in the brainwave frequency. New electrical activity is produced during this “shaping,” leading to reduced symptoms and better self-regulation of the brain.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We record and study the norms, statistics and the shape of brainwaves through a quantitative EEG. Dr. Roseann will meet with you and review your brain map, signaling what could be the causes or states of your condition. During consultation, she will form a treatment plan that will best help you and your condition.* Next, you will start your Neurofeedback appointments. Electrical sensors are placed on the surface of the scalp and ears. You will watch a movie while simultaneously receiving brainwave reinforcement. An average treatment plan is about 20-100 sessions, but number of sessions given vary from patient to patient. Most individuals in the Newtown area come twice a week, but your plan will be tailored to best serve you as an individual.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive alternative to medicine. Thousands of research studies conducted over the past 40 years have confirmed that Neurofeedback does not only treat many conditions affecting both children and adults, but that it supports efficacy.* In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, tying with medication.
