What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a safe, non-medicated alternative treatment that focuses on information (feedback) of your brainwaves (neuro) and helps you reinforce change in your brainwave activity. The brain will normally self-regulate to calm down your nervous system to help reduce symptoms. Without the ability to self-regulate, your central nervous system won’t be able to avoid conditions like anxiety, depression and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback due to the focus on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a non-medicated therapy that focuses on learning how to control your bodily functions like breath, heart rate, and skin temperature. During your sessions, we’ll control electrical sensors to you that will help give us information (feedback) about your body (bio). We’ll be able to record your data for analysis and help you control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Compared to Neurofeedback, Biofeedback helps you control your autonomic functions. When you have power over your body, you’ll be able to lead a healthier lifestyle.*

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a brain map that measures electrical patterns in your cortical activity. Usually quantitative EEGs are computer analyses of your EEG data. We’ll compare your EEG data to a reference database to find similarities to your current conditions. When we find certain patterns, they can be the result of depression, anxiety or many other conditions. We’ll use your QEEG data for your treatment plan and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback involves helping individuals modify their own brainwave activity to promote a healthier lifestyle. With the use of computers, we’ll be able to monitor and record your brain function and show it to you. We’ll train you to promote or reduce different brain wave frequencies, and reward your brain when it changes its activity. The purpose of doing this is so that you will begin to constantly produce more appropriate patterns. Reinforcements help produce new electrical activity in the brain, and help “shape” your brainwave activity to a more desirable, regulated performance. These changes will result in symptom reduction and help your brain self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Before sessions begin, we’ll first have to study your brainwave activities. To do this, we’ll conduct a QEEG Brain Map, a procedure that involves recording and analyzing EEG activity. After your Brain Map, you’ll meet with Dr. Roseann to review it and make a treatment plan. After we put the protocol into place, you can immediately start your Neurofeedback sessions. The number of sessions that you will attend will be based on your treatment plan, and range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most individuals living in New Haven County will come in two times per week. Sessions involve placing sensors on your scalp and ears while you receive brainwave reinforcement through watching a movie.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

  • Through a regular, customized symptom checklist progress monitoring

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, alternative treatment that can help children and adults suffering from certain conditions. Over the past 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies that help support the efficacy of Neurofeedback. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
