What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment used to study the information (or feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforce change and teach self-regulation of brain function.* Without self-regulation, central nervous problems can occur also causing anxiety, depression and other physical symptoms. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback but it differs by concentrating on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback deals with electronically monitoring normal automatic bodily functions like breath, heart rate or skin temperature and training them. Patients are connected to an electrical sensor that provides information (feedback) to the body (bio). This way you can learn to control small changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Instead of concentrating on autonomic functions like neurofeedback, biofeedback is in control of your autonomic functions. If you are able to take control of your body, you will be in an improved state of health*

What is QEEG?

QEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalogram. This is a measurement of electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp that follow brainwaves otherwise known as cortical electrical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of an EEG. Data taken from the EEG is compared to a reference database consisting of a number of EEGs associated with other people. Distinct patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety, and many others. The QEEG is used for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is the process of helping someone modify their own brainwave activity. This is done by the use of computers where we can record brain functions and show live feedback to the client. We can help them promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies thus rewarding the brain for changing activity and producing successful patterns. By reinforcing this action, we are actually producing new electrical activity and “shaping” brainwave activity toward a more regulated and desired performance. Making changes like these lead to symptom reduction, and the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Our neurofeedback process begins with performing a QEEG brain map, a procedure where we record and analyze EEG activity. You will then meet with Dr. Roseann to look over your brain map and configure a treatment plan. Once this has been designed, you can start your Neurofeedback sessions immediately. These treatments involve having sensors placed on your scalp and ears while we have you watch a movie. The movie will help us receive brainwave reinforcement. The number of your sessions will vary. You could average between 20-100 sessions or more* and most individuals decide to come in twice a week.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

After performing the QEEG, Dr. Roseann will use your results to recommend a treatment. Based on these results and clinical intake, she will be able to determine what therapy or therapies will be best for you. We are proud to provide our alternative therapies to our New Canaan residents.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

Your progress is monitored in three ways:

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to look at brain function
  • Through collecting data at every neurofeedback session
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is proven to be a safe, non-invasive alternative for conditions that affect both children and adults. Thousands of research studies for over the past 40 years show its adequacy. In fact, in 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics regarded the treatment with a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, tying first place with medication*
