What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is the reinforcement of change by analyzing the information (feedback) sent by the brainwaves (neuro). This is process is both safe and non-invasive.* The brain’s job is to self-regulate the body to calm the nervous system and lessen symptoms. Without this, conditions can arise within the central nervous system such as anxiety, depression and even physical symptom such as depression, anxiety, and physical symptoms.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback focuses on autonomic functions of the body. Controlling bodily functions such as breath, skin temperature and heart rate is the goal of Biofeedback. Electrical sensors are connected to patients to gather data (feedback) about the body (bio). By scrutinizing the minute changes, the objective is for you to learn and control the subtle relaxation and contractions of the muscles or learn better stress control, with the aim of improving your health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) Brain Map is the measured electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. The EEG data is compared to a database containing a large quantity of data of other EEG results. Specific patterns may depict depression, others may be a sign of anxiety, and many more patterns for more conditions. A QEEG is the first step in a treatment plan, and helps the process of overcoming your condition.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is the process of helping you modify your own brainwave activity. With computers, we observe brainwaves and functions that give feedback to the client. Then we discipline them in order to “shape” the brain activity by rewarding positive changes in the brainwave frequencies.New electrical activity is produced during this “shaping,” leading to reduced symptoms and an increase in self-regulation.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We conduct a QEEG Brain Map as the first step. We record and study statistics, norms and your brainwaves through a quantitative EEG. Dr. Roseann will meet with you and review your brain map, signaling what could be the causes or states of your condition. While consulting you, she will create a treatment plan that best facilitates healing.* Next, you start your Neurofeedback sessions. Electrical sensors are placed on the surface of the scalp and ears. While watching a movie, you will simultaneously be receiving brainwave reinforcement.  Number of sessions vary from patient to patients, averaging 20-100 sessions or more.* Most individuals in the Wilton area come in twice a week but your treatment plan will differ to best serve you.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe alternative to medicine. Through thousands of research studies conducted over the past 40 years, it has been confirmed that Neurofeedback can not only treat many conditions affecting both children and adults, but that it supports efficacy. In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, tying with medication.
