Research-Based, Neuro Treatment in Mahopac, NY for:
What is Neurofeedback?
The brain has an incredible ability to self-regulate. Without this self-regulation, the brain would be unable to relax the nervous system and consequently not able to reduce or relax symptoms. This disruption can manifest in anxiety, depression, and other physical problems. Neurofeedback is a safe, alternative form of treatment in which the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) is studied and positive changes are reinforced.* Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback in that biofeedback focuses on autonomic functions while Neurofeedback revolves around brainwaves.
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback controls autonomic functions, so although it deals with natural processes in the body, it differs from neurofeedback, which controls brainwaves. By using biofeedback, a person can learn to control their breath, heart rate, skin temperature, and other functions related to the body. Dr. Roseann attaches electrical sensors to the scalp. These sensors measure and relay information (feedback) about the body (bio). We can record the results, which allows the patient to learn to control small changes, which might include relaxing muscles or reducing stress. If you have power over your body, you can begin to improve your health.*
What is QEEG?
A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns that reflect cortical activity. These measurements are taken on the very surface of the scalp using sensors. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. This EEG data is compared to a reference database containing a standard set of data by other people’s EEGs. This allows Dr. Roseann to compare the information and identify specific patterns. Different or unusual patterns can sometimes indicate conditions such as depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and tracking progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
By using Neurofeedback, individuals can actually learn the skills and methods needed to modify and adjust their own brainwave activity. In our office, we can monitor brain functioning using computers, providing real-time feedback to the patient. In treatment sessions, we will teach you to control different brainwave frequencies, and then help you learn how to reward the brain for changing its own activity. As a result, the brain will produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, new electrical activity is actually produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into a more regular performance. The brain learns to self-regulate, resulting in reduced symptoms.* How Do I know which therapy I need?
After a QEEG, based on your QEEG results and clinical intake information, Dr. Roseann will review your results with you and recommend a treatment plan. The most appropriate course of treatment and types of therapies will be suggested. We proudly serve individuals and families in the Mahopac area with these safe, alternative therapies.
What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?
We conduct a non-invasive procedure called a QEEG Brain Map. During the QEEG Brain Map process, EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. Dr. Roseann will then meet with you to review your brain map and design an appropriate treatment plan. As soon as a protocol has been established, you can begin your Neurofeedback sessions! During these non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical treatment sessions, sensors are placed on the scalp and ears. You will then receive brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie. The number of sessions required varies based on each individual. The number of appointments can range from 20 to 100 or more.* Most Mahopac residents who visit our office for two appointments per week.

How Do You Monitor Progress?
Progress is tracked in three different ways :
- Through QEEGs conducted at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
- Through data collection at each Neurofeedback session.
- Through regular, customized symptom checklist progress monitoring
Is the Therapy Supported by Research?
Neurofeedback is a safe alternative to pharmaceutical or invasive treatments for many conditions affecting everyone from children to adults. The efficacy of this alternative treatment has been validated by thousands of research studies over the past 40+ years. The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating—the same effect as pharmaceutical treatment*—in the treatment of ADHD in 2013.*
