What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment used to study the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and used to reinforce change in your brainwave activity. Typically, the brain will self-regulate to calm your nervous system and diminish any symptoms you are feeling or experiencing. If you don’t have self-regulation, the central nervous system will cause problems like anxiety, depression and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback is a similar treatment form, but it focuses more on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the method of learning how to control your bodily functions like breath, heart rate or skin temperature. During your treatments, we’ll attach electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about your body (bio). We’ll be able to record your data and help you learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Compared to Neurofeedback, you’re controlling your autonomic functions. When you have more power over your body, you’ll be able to have an improved state of mental health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) is a brain map that measures electrical patterns in your cortical activity. These quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of EEG data. We’ll then take the EEG data and compare it to a reference database that consists of a standard set of other people’s EEG results. By comparing multiple sets of data, we’ll be able to offer you a more accurate interpretation. From there, we’ll be able to determine signs of depression, anxiety and others conditions. Your QEEG data will be used for both your treatment plan and your progress to better health.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

The purpose of Neurofeedback is to help individuals suffering from certain conditions learn to modify their own brainwave activity. By using computers, we’ll be able to monitor your brain functions and show you how you are currently functioning. During Neurofeedback sessions, we can train you to promote or reduce certain brain wave frequencies. To keep your brainwave activity consistent we’ll help you reward your brain for changing its activity to keep you producing more appropriate patterns. By reinforcing your habits, we’ll be able to create new electrical activity in your brain to help “shape” your activity toward a more desirable, regulated performance. Changes like these will result in symptom reduction and help your brain self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Even before we begin your Neurofeedback sessions, we first have to conduct a QEEG Brain Map. This is a procedure that deals with recording your brain functions in a way that we can analyze them. You’ll then meet with Dr.Roseann who will review your Brain Map and create a treatment plan for you. If you wish, we can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions after your review. The number of sessions you attend will be based on your plan and usually can range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most individuals in the Litchfield County area will come in two times per week. When you attend your session, it will involve placing sensors on your scalp and ears and by giving you reinforcements like watching a movie.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

After conducting a QEEG, Dr. Roseann will take a look at your results and provide you with treatment recommendations. These recommendations will be based on your QEEG and current clinical intake. We proudly serve our Litchfield County residents with these alternative therapies.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

Progress is monitored in three primary ways:

  • QEEGs performed at scheduled intervals to observe brain functioning.
  • Data and information collected from every session.
  • Customized symptom checklist designed for monitored progress.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Yes, Neurofeedback is supported by research that defends this treatment as an alternative, drug-tree procedure for certain conditions for both children and adults. Thousands of research studies have been conducted to prove the efficacy of Neurofeedback over the past 40 years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, tying with medication.*
