What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback provides a safe, non-invasive option for treatment through studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* The brain is able to self-regulate and calm the nervous system so that symptoms are diminished. Absence of this self-regulation can cause central nervous problems to arise including anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback due to its focus on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

The process of Biofeedback consists of an individual learning to control bodily functions such as breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. We are able to measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio) by connecting our patients to electrical sensors. By doing this, you can record and learn to control subtle changes like muscle relaxation or stress reduction. It is different from Neurofeedback because it controls the individual’s autonomic functions. One can improve their health by having power over their body.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map provides measurements of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that represent cortical activity. EEG data is analyzed on the computer through a quantitative EEG. This EEG data is compared to other people’s EEG from a reference database. Specific patterns can signal depression, anxiety and many other issues. The QEEG is used for treatment planning as well as progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback consists of teaching an individual how to modify their own brainwave activity. By utilizing computers, we can monitor brain functioning and share that live feedback with our clients in Hartford County. We train them to increase or reduce various brain wave frequencies, then we reward the brain for changing its activity by producing more suitable patterns. This reinforcement causes new electrical activity to be produced in the brain, shaping the brainwave activity in a more desirable and regulated performance. As a result of these changes, symptom reduction occurs as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

In the beginning we conduct a QEEG Brain Map; during this procedure, EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. Dr. Roseann will then meet with you to review your brain map and make a treatment plan. Once a protocol is designed, you will immediately be able to begin your Neurofeedback sessions.  The number of sessions required differ depending on the individual, but vary from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most of our patients in Hartford County come in two times per week. During the session, we place sensors on the scalp and ears and get brainwave reinforcement while you’re watching a movie.
