What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a process of understanding each individuals unique neurological activity. This is done in a safe, non-invasive method. Each of our patients can begin to understand how their brain activity affects their health, and take steps toward controlling this behavior using rewards and reinforcement. Without self regulation, a patient may never get over the symptoms associated with anxiety, depression and other disorders.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback slightly. With Biofeedback, we seek to monitor the autonomic biological activities of each patient such as breathing, heart rate and temperature. Using sensors, we can understand how the processes happen in each of our patients, as well as how to change them subtly. After a patient has more control over these autonomic processes, they can reduce stress and improve their health.

What is QEEG?

A QEEG is a quantitative representation of EEG results. An EEG shows neocortical activity of the brain through electrical patterns in neurons. Using monitors on a patient’s scalp, their neurological activity can be monitored and recorded. Once recorded, this data can be referenced and compared. Specific QEEG patterns can reflect certain disorders including depression, anxiety and others. The QEEG is used both to diagnose certain disorders, and to understand how treatment methods are working.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive strategy used to understand and modify neurological activity/ Through the use of sensors, brain functioning is mapped out to each patient. By using reinforcement and rewards, each patient can begin to promote healthy brain captivity, or diminish unwanted activity. The brain can then be “shaped” toward appropriate behavior. This strategy is used to change behavior and alleviate the symptoms caused by certain disorders. When patients are able to self regulate their brain activity, they are able to reach healthy states without the use of potentially harmful medications.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The Neurofeedback process is started by understanding brain activity through a QEEG. The QEEG is a visual representation of the electrical activity of the brain. Dr. Roseann reviews the QEEG data and determines which brain activity may need to be changed, and the best strategies for changing this behavior. After Dr. Roseann has designed a course for treatment, you can then begin the Neurofeedback sessions. While every patient is different, most patients require 20-100 sessions. For most of our Hamden patients, two sessions per week is typical. This may seem overwhelming, although the process is quite easy. Most sessions require easy actions, such as watching a movie, with sensors attached to monitor behavior.

We monitor progress in three ways :

  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free treatment alternative for many conditions affecting children and adults. There have been thousands of research studies supporting its efficacy during the past 40 plus years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
