Research Based, Neuro Treatment in Goldens Bridge for:
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive practice that involves studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing those changes made.* The brain self-regulates in order to relax the nervous system and relieve symptoms. Without this self-regulation, central nervous problems—including anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms—can arise. While neurofeedback focuses on brainwaves, biofeedback focuses on one’s autonomic functions.
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback occurs when one learns to control their breath, heart rate, skin temperature, and other bodily functions. It differs from neurofeedback, as it controls the autonomic functions instead of brain waves. We measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio) by connecting patients to electrical sensors. By recording and examining the results, the patient can learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Power over one’s body can lead to an improvement of health.*
What is QEEG?
A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflects cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. The data from the EEG is compared to a reference database comprised of a standard data set of other people’s EEGs. Specific patterns can be a sign of depression, anxiety and other conditions. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
Neurofeedback is the process of learning how to modify one’s own brainwave activity. We are able to use computers to monitor brain functioning while showing that feedback to the client in real time. We train our patients to promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies, rewarding the brain for changing its own activity. This produces more appropriate patterns. Through this process, new electrical activity is produced in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into a more desirable, more regulated performance. As the brain learns to self-regulate, symptoms are reduced.*
What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?
The first step involves of the neurofeedback process requires that we conduct a QEEG Brain Map. This is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. The patient then meets with Dr. Roseann to review the brain map and design a treatment plan. Once a protocol has been developed, patients can immediately begin Neurofeedback sessions. In these sessions, sensors are placed on the scalp and ears. The patient receives brainwave reinforcement as they watch a movie. The number of sessions required varies based on each individual, but the number generally ranges from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most individuals from Goldens Bridge visit our office for two appointments per week.

How Do You Monitor Progress?
We monitor progress in three ways :
- Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
- Through data collection at each Neurofeedback session.
- Through regular, customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.
Is the Therapy Supported by Research?
Neurofeedback is a safe, drug-free alternative treatment for many different conditions affecting children and adults. Thousands of research studies supporting its efficacy have been published during the past 40+ years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics assigned it a Level 1 effectiveness rating—the same effectiveness as pharmaceutical treatment*—in the treatment of ADHD.*
