What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, secure treatment that helps study information (feedback) from your brainwaves (neuro) and lets us create a plan to reinforce change in your activity.* Normally, your brain should self-regulate to calm your nervous system to diminish existing symptoms. Without the ability to self-regulate, your central nervous system can produce problems like anxiety, depression and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback, seeing that it solely focuses on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the practice of teaching individuals to control their bodily functions like breath, heart rate or skin temperature. When you have a Biofeedback session, we’ll hook you up to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about your body (bio). This way, we can record your data and learn how to help you control subtle changes like relaxing your muscles or reducing stress. This treatment is different from Neurofeedback because you’ll be able to control your autonomic functions. When you have more power over your body, you’ll be able to lead a more improved lifestyle.*

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a brain map that measures the electrical patterns that stem from your cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is simply a computer analysis of the EEG data we’ll gather. We’ll compare your EEG data to a reference database with a standard set of other people’s EEGs. When we compare data, we’re looking to see what signs are similar that could be depression, anxiety, and many more. Your QEEG results will be used for both your treatment plan and progress.*

My husband and I have two special needs children and are very involved in their education. We only use the best providers and Dr. Roseann is simply the best. From evaluations to neurofeedback to parent coaching, she has been there for my family. She is so knowledgeable and experienced in so many areas and we know that we can always run anything by her.  One of our children has Autism and PANS with significant communication and behavioral issues and Dr. Roseann and her staff have always given us the most loving care and work to support his sensory needs. I can’t recommend Dr. Roseann and Associates more highly.

The 360 Reboot program turned my daughter’s life around. She had been plagued with anxiety her whole life and never responded to regular talk therapy. With intensive neurofeedback, biofeedback, psychotherapy, and parent coaching, she was able to break the anxiety cycle. She is a happy young adult and we couldn’t be prouder of her and more grateful for the staff at Dr. Roseann and Associates.

As an educator myself, I had seen several of my students make positive and often dramatic changes after going to Dr. Roseann’s center. When my son started having problems at school paying attention, I knew that my husband and I wanted Dr. Roseann’s experienced care. She was spot on in diagnosing the issues with the brain map and walked us through the step by step process of what we needed to do. Our son and family have benefited so much from the center’s help. He never needed medication and with neurofeedback and dietary changes, he became the best person he could be. It has been several years and my son is now thriving in college.

As a therapist myself, I knew that Dr. Roseann is one of the top mental health experts on PANS/PANDAS and Lyme Disease. So when I became sick, she was the first person I called for help. She was able to connect me with the right Lyme medical experts so I could get treatment. I was very lucky that the biofeedback and BRT at the center started helping my headaches and anxiety immediately. I am about 90 percent better and I wouldn’t be feeling so great if it weren't for Dr. Roseann.

After my son with ADHD and anxiety had terrible reactions to medications, we went to Dr. Roseann on the recommendation of our pediatrician. She helped us to understand why his brain and body was reacting to medication and why he was experiencing anxiety, focus, and impulse control issues. After 10 years of many therapists and psychiatrists, we finally saw some major change in on our son with neurofeedback, BRT, and counseling. His therapist helped him and us improve his executive functioning and alertness. It was scary to see him suffer so much on ADHS medications and I am so glad he is happy and our home life isn’t so stressful.

As a family highly impacted by the 12-14 tragedy in Sandy Hook, Dr. Roseann and staff has given us help over the years. From learning how to use EFT/Tapping to manage our anxiety to neurofeedback, everyone in our family has been helped. We learned so much about how trauma impacts the brain and the neuroscience part of stress, anxiety, and trauma. When confronted with such stress, you can’t imagine things will get better, but they did with their help.

As a physician, I knew exactly where to take my son for the best possible mental health care. My son was so anxious from an undiagnosed learning disability and a poor school program. Dr. Roseann evaluated my son and gave us recommendations that were so specific, we could after many years of pushing and prodding the school, finally get him the right program at school. Her center was able to provide all the therapies he needed to improve his cognitive processing speed and reduce anxiety with the highest level of clinical care.

Our adult daughter had treatment resistant depression and was suffering when we came to Dr. Roseann’s center. Even though other therapists had turned us away, her team supported our daughter in a way that we had never experienced. With intensive counseling and neurofeedback, she was able to not be anxious for the first time in her life and her depression stopped.

Our time with Dr. Roseann and her staff during our 360 Reboot intensive therapies program was special. Our little guy gained so many skills in a short time and we received so much education about his needs and what we needed to do along the developmental spectrum to keep him growing in the right direction. We wish we had found her center sooner!

Dr. Roseann treated my ADHD when I was a teenager after my parents tried medications for years on me. I hated every minute of those medications and I felt so irritated all the time. After about 18 sessions, it was like my brain shifted and I woke up from a fog. It has been 6 years since I finished neurofeedback and my attention is awesome!

You have accomplished wonders for my grandson. He is now the child he was always meant to be. Your program was the best investment in his life. I worked with so many young college students who struggled with ADHD and I did not want to see that happen to him. I am so happy that he has been able to benefit from the program. I tell everyone with a child who has attention issues that your program works wonders.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is an alternative therapy that offers treatment options for people suffering with eating disorders, addictions, anxiety and so on. This type of treatment is proven to help a person learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. With the use of computers, we’ll be able to monitor your brain functions and we’ll be able to show you how you’re functioning and what we can do to help you. Through our sessions, we’ll train you how to promote or reduce your brain wave frequencies and give your brain rewards to help promote healthy and appropriate patterns. Reinforcements help you produce new, positive electrical activity that will help “shape” you toward a more desirable and regulated performance. Changes like these usually result in symptom reduction and helps you self-regulate your brain.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Before we can begin any sessions, we’ll first need to conduct a QEEG Brain Map where we will record your EEG activity and have the ability to analyze it. Afterwards, you’ll meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and she’ll craft a custom treatment plan for you. With this treatment plan in mind, we’ll be able to immediately begin Neurofeedback sessions if you would like. The number of sessions you attend will be based on your preferences and treatment plan, but most individuals come in between 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Those living in the Fairfield County area will typically attend two sessions per week. During these sessions, we’ll place sensors on your scalp and ears while we record data and supply you with reinforcement such as watching a movie.

How Do I Get Started with Neuro/BioFeedback?

For individuals living in the Fairfield County area, you can call our Ridgefield office to schedule your QEEG Brain Map. If you are interested in attending one of our Neurofeedback information sessions, you can –click here– to see our updated schedule.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

After we perform an initial QEEG, Dr. Roseann will take a look at your results and put together a treatment plan with you. The treatment plan will be based on your QEEG results and your current clinical intake. We proudly serve our Fairfield County, CT residents with these alternative therapies.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

Progress is monitored in three primary ways:

  • QEEGs performed at scheduled intervals to observe brain functioning.
  • Data and information collected from every session.
  • Customized symptom checklist designed for monitored progress.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Yes, Neurofeedback is an alternative and safe treatment to help a variety of conditions in children and adults. Over the past 40 years, there have been thousands of recorded research studies that support the results of Neurofeedback. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics rewarded it with a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, similar to the effectiveness of medication.*
