What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a safe, non-medicine and non-invasive treatment used to study information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforce change.* Through this process, the brain will self-regulate itself to calm the nervous system and subside symptoms. Without self-regulation, central nervous problems like anxiety, depression and certain physical symptoms can arise. Neurofeedback focuses on autonomic functions making it different from Biofeedback.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of learning how to control bodily functions like breath, heart rate, and skin temperature. Electrical sensors are attached to patients to measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). With recording and testing, we can help you find ways to control subtle contractions and relaxations of muscles and even learn to control stress. The power to take control of your body can lead to an improved state of health.* Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback because it focuses on autonomic functions.

What is QEEG?

A QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) is a brain map of the measurement of electrical patterns on the exterior of the scalp to reflect cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of EEG data. We then compare the EEG data to a reference database that has a standard set of other people’s EEG results. Certain patterns can be signs of depression, anxiety, and many others. We use the QEEG for both treatment of planning and progress*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

The process of neurofeedback involves helping someone modify their own brainwave activity. By using computers, we can monitor brain functions and show live feedback to our clients. We train our clients to promote or reduce different brain wave frequencies and reward the brain for changing its own activity to result in appropriate patterns. Through this change, new electrical activity is produced in the brain, and brainwave activity is “shaped” toward a more regulated performance. This results in symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

We first begin the process by starting a QEEEG brain map. This procedure involves having EEG activity recorded and statistically analyzed. Dr. Roseann will then review the brain map and figure out what causes the conditions and put together a treatment plan. Neurofeedback sessions will proceed. This involves sensors being placed on the scalp and ears while receiving brainwave reinforcements engaged by a movie. The number of sessions can be from 20-100 or more.* And most people come in twice a week.

  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through a regular customized symptom checklist

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive treatment for both children and adults. Thousands of research studies have been conducted over the past 40 years. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD, tying first place with medication.*
