What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-medicated, secure form of treatment that is completed by studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing change.* Normally the brain will self-regulate itself, helping to diminish any symptoms of illnesses. Without being able to self-regulate, the central nervous system will cause problems like anxiety, depression and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback because it solely focuses on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is the process of gaining the ability to control your bodily functions like breath, heart rate or skin temperature. During your sessions, we’ll attach electrical sensors to you to measure and give information (feedback) about your body (bio). By studying your brain activity, we can record your data and help you learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback because it deals with controlling your autonomic functions. When you can have power over your body, you’ll be able to live an improved state of health.*

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a brain map that measures the electrical patterns of your cortical activity which exist on the very surface of your scalp. A quantitative QEEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. This data is then compared to a reference database that consists of a standard set of other people’s EEGs. This will help us identify specific patterns that have been shown to be signs of depression, anxiety and many others. We’ll also use your QEEG results to create a treatment plan and document your progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

The treatment of Neurofeedback involves helping a person learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. When you come to our Ridgefield office to have Neurofeedback sessions, we’ll be able to help you with the use of a computer. Using a computer lets us monitor and record your brain functions and we’ll be able to show you what your results look like. From there, we can train you to promote or reduce different brain wave frequencies, and we can reward your brain for changing its own activity and produce more appropriate patterns. By reinforcement, we mean that we want your brain to create new electrical activity that will help “shape” you toward a more desirable, regulated performance. These changes will help you reduce your symptoms and help your brain self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

For our Dutchess County patients, Neurofeedback treatments first begin with a QEEG Brain Map. This is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and analyzed. Afterwards you’ll meet with Dr. Roseann and review your brain map and create a treatment plan. Once this treatment plan is agreed upon, you can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions if you wish. Your number of sessions will be dependent on your treatment plan, but they can range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Individuals living in Dutchess County will usually come into the office two times per week. The sessions involve placing sensors on your scalp and ears while you receive brainwave reinforcement from watching a movie.

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

After you receive a QEEG Brain Map, Dr. Roseann will take a look at your results and review them with you. She’ll craft a treatment plan based on your QEEG results and current clinical intake to provide you with the therapy or therapies that best suit your conditions. We proudly serve Dutchess County residents with these alternative therapies.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor your progress in three different ways:

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively take a look at your brain functioning
  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session
  • Through a regular, customized symptom checklist progress monitoring

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Yes, Neurofeedback is supported by research. To prove that it is a safe alternative to medication for children and adults, there’s 40 years of research available. In all those years, there’s been thousands of research studies to prove the efficacy of Neurofeedback. In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, which is the same effectiveness as medication.*
