What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is an alternative, non-invasive treatment that helps study information (feedback) from your brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing change.* The purpose of the brain is to self-regulate and help you calm your nervous system and rid you of any symptoms. Without the ability to self-regulate, problems like anxiety, depression or physical symptoms can occur in the nervous system. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback, seeing that it focuses on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

The process of Biofeedback is carried out by learning to control one’s own bodily functions like breath, heart rate or skin temperature. During your session, you’ll be attached to electrical sensors that will help us measure and give information (feedback) about your body (bio). We’ll be able to record all of the information and help you learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. This type of treatment is different from Neurofeedback because you’ll learn to control your autonomic functions. When you have more control over your body, you’ll be able to live a better life.*

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a Brain Map that helps us measure the electrical patterns in your cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. We’ll then take your EEG data and compare it to a database filled with other people’s EEGs. This will help us reference similar symptoms to what you may be experiencing. When we find specific patterns, they could be the sign of depression, anxiety and others. We will use your QEEG for both treatment planning and progress.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Treatments for Neurofeedback are helpful because they help individuals learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. When you attend our sessions, we’ll be able to monitor and record your brainwave activity with the help of computers. We’ll be able to train your brain to promote or reduce certain brain wave frequencies. To keep your results consistent, we’ll reward your brain for changing its own activity and help “shape” your brainwave activity for a more desirable, regulated performance. These changes will help reduce your symptoms and help your brain to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

Neurofeedback begins with conducting a QEEG Brain Map, a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and can be analyzed. Your Brain Map results only be studied by Dr. Roseann and she’ll be able to craft a unique treatment plan for your conditions. After you agree upon the right treatments, you can immediately begin your Neurofeedback sessions. The number of session you attend will be based on your treatment plan. Individuals seeking treatment in the Connecticut area usually come from 20 to 100 or more sessions, and around two times per week.* Each session will involve placing sensors on your scalp and ears while we give you brainwave reinforcements like watching a movie.

The plan will revolve around your QEEG results and clinical intake to determine which treatments will help you on the road to health. We proudly serve our patients in Connecticut with these alternative therapies.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

We monitor your progress in three ways :

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback is a safe, alternative treatment to medication and it helps children and adults suffering from a variety of conditions. To prove its efficacy, there have been thousands of research studies that have been conducted over the past 40 years. In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics rewarded Neurofeedback with a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, tying it with medication.*
