What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-medical, safe type of treatment in which the brainwaves are studied in order to be changed. * The brain calms the nervous system by self-regulating in order to make symptoms disappear. If this self-regulation does not exist, new central nervous issues can crop up including depression, anxiety and a host of physical symptoms. Biofeedback is different from Neurofeedback because it is based on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback occurs when an individual learns to control bodily functions. Breathing, heart rate and skin temperature are all body functions that can be of benefit to control with Biofeedback. We hook up electrical sensors to the patient. These electrical sensors measure the information (feedback) about the patient’s body (bio). This process makes it, so the patient can become aware of, and then change behaviors such as relaxing muscles and de-stressing. This is control of a person’s autonomic function, which is how it is different from Neurofeedback. Control over one’s physical body can lead to positive changes in one’s health. *

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram is also called a QEEG. It is a map of the brain that measures electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp. These record cortical activity. A computer analysis of the EEG information is called a Quantitative EEG. This date is cross-referenced with a database that includes a standard set by other patient’s EEG data. Many patters can be a sign of anxiety or depression. The QEEG is helpful for planning treatment and reflecting progress. *

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is how we teach a person how to modify the activity of their own brainwaves. Using computers, we watch brain function and show live feedback to the patient. Our practitioners promote or scale back different frequencies of brain waves by rewarding the brain for changing its activities. Through this practice, new electrical activity is produced in the patient’s brain. This shapes the brain to behave in a more desirable and regulated performance. This aids in the reduction of symptoms.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

First, we conduct a QEEG Map of the brain. This procedure is where activity is recorded and analyzed using statistics. The patient will then meet with Dr. Roseann to talk about the brain map and develop a plan for treatment. Once a plan has been designed, the patient can immediately start a Neurofeedback session. The amount of sessions required will depend on the individual. The sessions range anywhere from 20-100+ sessions. * Most Croton Falls patients come twice a week. We place sensors on your scalp and ears and promote brainwave reinforcement as you observe a film.

    2. We collect and interpret data during your Neurofeedback session
    3. Through periodic custom symptom checklist monitoring

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

Neurofeedback does not involve the taking of any drugs. It is a safe alternative treatment for many different conditions that affect both children and adults. Through thousands of research studies, we have found great support for its efficiency throughout the last 40 years. In the year 2013, The American Academy of Pediatric assigned a Level 1 effectiveness rating in the treatment of ADHD. This is the same level as medication*
