What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive method for treatment used to study and alter the neurological activity of each patient’s brain. With this method, our patients can learn how their brain functions and start to self-regulate their behavior. Through Neurofeedback a patient can start to diminish symptoms while promoting healthy neurological activity. Without this regulation, patients may be stuck with the symptoms associated with disorders such as anxiety, depression and others.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a therapy option used to understand autonomic biological processes of the body such as breathing rate, heart rate and skin temperature. Each patient is connected to sensors in order to monitor these biological functions. Our patients can then begin to use biological feedback to better control these processes. Controlling these can drastically lower stress and improve health for patients. Biofeeback differs from Neurofeedback in that biological feedback is centered around these processes instead of neurological processes.

What is QEEG?

QEEG is a method of quantifying an electroencephalogram. The electroencephalogram is used to measure the electrical activity of neocortical areas of the brain. This neuronal activity is measured through the use of monitors placed on ones scalp. Once the data is collected, it can then be referenced to understand how a patient’s brain functions. Certain QEEG results may show signs of disorders including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and others. A QEEG can be used for diagnosing patients and understanding the results of various therapies.

Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, Ed.D., LPC, BCN, and her team work, work with individuals and families of all ages with various health issues. Our professional staff offers support and non-judgmental care to help alleviate stress and promote health solutions.

Each QEEG analysis is performed personally by Dr. Roseann. She offers custom therapy options including Neurofeedback and Biofeedback techniques based on your results. Regardless of your heath concerns, Dr. Roseann offers safe treatment options for each of her patients throughout the Cross River area.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is a process of helping an individual modify their neurological behavior. Using monitors, neocortical functions can be shown to each patient. Using feedback methods, appropriate neuronal activity can be established for each of our clients. By using reinforcement and rewards, each new brain activity is “shaped” to improve a patient’s health. Symptoms can be reduced, or completely resolved, depending on condition and successful implementation of appropriate behavior.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

To start the process, we normally perform a QEEG to understand each patients neurological activity. Dr. Roseann, upon reviewing the QEEG results, generates a treatment plan based on your specifications and health needs. We can then begin neurofeedback based on your needs. This process involves sensors being placed on the patient during basic actions, such as watching a movie.Although every patient is different, typically patients require 20-100 sessions at two sessions a week.

In 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating for the treatment of ADHD, rating the same as medication.*
