What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive form of treatment for us to study the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* The brain self-regulates to calm the nervous system in order to eliminate symptoms. The absence of this self-regulation can often cause central nervous problems to arise – anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback varies from Neurofeedback because of its focus on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a process that involves learning to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. Our Cortland patients are connected to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). This enables you to record and learn to control subtle changes like muscle relaxation or stress reduction. Unlike neurofeedback it is the control of one’s autonomic functions. Power over the body can cause the improvement of one’s health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map measures the electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. We compare this EEG data to a reference database of a standard set by other people’s EEG. Certain patterns are often a sign of depression, anxiety and many more. The QEEG is used for treatment planning along progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Through Neurofeedback a person can learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. By using computers, we can monitor brain functioning and share that live feedback with the client. We teach them to promote or reduce different brain wave frequencies, following with rewarding the brain for modifying its own activity to produce more appropriate patterns. Through this reinforcement, the brain actually produces new electrical activity, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” toward a more desirable, more regulated performance. These changes lead to symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step of this process is to conduct a QEEG Brain Map; this is a procedure where EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. Following this, you’ll meet with Dr. Roseann to review your brain map and develop a treatment plan. Once we design a protocol, you can immediately start your Neurofeedback sessions.  The number of sessions required differ depending on each individual, but range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most of our Cortland clients come in twice a week. A session consists of the placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while getting brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

As a treatment alternative, Neurofeedback is a safe and drug-free option for many conditions impacting children and adults in Cortland.
