What is Neurofeedback?
The brain naturally self-regulates in order to calm the nervous system. Without this self-regulation, central nervous problems occur – anxiety, depression, sometimes even physical symptoms are manifested. Biofeedback is not the same as Neurofeedback it focuses on automatic functions. Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive form of treatment, done by studying the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.*
What is Biofeedback?
Unlike neurofeedback, Biofeedback is the process of learning to control the bodily functions that we do automatically without needing to think about, such as breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. We can collect and record information to learn to control subtle changes like relaxing muscles or reducing stress. To do this we connect patients to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). Power over one’s body can lead to an improvement of health.*
What is QEEG?
A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map is the measurement of electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer analysis of the EEG data. Patterns in the EEG data can show signs of depression, anxiety and many others. This EEG data is compared to a reference database of a standard set by other people’s EEG. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
You might still be wondering what exactly is Neurofeedback? Neurofeedback involves helping a person learn how to modify their own brainwave activity. How does the process work? We Start by collecting information using computers. We are able to monitor brain functioning and show that live feedback to the client. We train the client to promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies, when the brain learns to produce more appropriate patterns, by changing its own activity, we reward it. This new teaching for the brain creates produces new electrical activity in the brain, and the brainwave activity is “shaped” toward a more regulated performance, which is better. These changes result in symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*
What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?
To begin you’ll create record the EEG activity of your brain. It will then be statistically analyzed to create a QEEG brain map. Following this Dr. Roseann will review your brain map with you, and put together a treatment plan. You can start your Neurofeedback sessions right away, once your protocol has been created. Typically the number of sessions is 20-100 or more, however, the number of sessions required is unique based on the specific needs of each individual.* During a typical session you will watch a movie, while receiving brainwave reinforcement from sensors placed on the scalp and ears. Cortland County patients usually come in two times per week.
