What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a type of treatment that does not involve medication and is safe. It entails studying the information (feedback) of the patients brain waves (neuro) and rewarding the change, thereby reinforcing the behavior. * The brain calms itself and the central nervous system by self-regulation, which diminishes undesirable symptoms. Without this control, or self-regulation, issues can occur such as depression and anxiety along with other various physical symptoms. Neurofeedback and Biofeedback are different in that Neurofeedback focuses on autonomic function.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is when one learns to control seemingly automatic functions like heart rate, breath, and skin temperature. At our Cheshire office, we place electrical sensors on the patient which measure information (feedback) about the body (bio). We then record this feedback and adapt to control the slight changes such as muscle relaxation and destressing. Neurofeedback and Biofeedback are different in that Neurofeedback focuses on autonomic function. This learned control over ones body function can lead to a drastic improvement of health, and reduces symptoms. *

What is QEEG?

A brain map that measures electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp is called a quantitative electroencephalogram, or a QEEG. The QEEG also measures cortical activity. A quantitative EEG is a computer breakdown of the information obtained by the EEG.  The EEG data is then cross-referenced with a database of other individuals EEG data. Certain patterns shown on the QEEG can indicate anxiety, depression and much more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and tracking the patients progress.* We offer this service at our Cheshire, CT location, and it is the first step in your treatment.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is when a person learns how to change their own brainwave activity to reduce undesirable symptoms. With the use of computers, we closely watch the brain function to show the live feedback to the client. We essentially train the brain to encourage more appropriate patterns, or brain wave frequencies. We then reward the brain for altering its activity. This causes new electrical activity to be produced in the patient, shaping a more desirable and regulated performance. The changes reduce the undesirable symptoms as the brain self-regulates. *

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step entails the patients getting a QEEG Brain Map. This is where the EEG is first recorded and then analyzed using statistics. The patient meets with Dr. Roseann to discuss your brain map and design a treatment. After this plan has been created, you can begin Neurofeedback sessions. The amount of sessions needed will vary between individuals- anywhere from 20-100 or more sessions. * Most individuals in Cheshire attend twice a week. The session entails placing sensors on the scalp and ears and receiving brainwave reinforcement while you watch a film.
