What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is not only safe, but a non-invasive form of treatment for patients in Branford, used to study the information (feedback) of brainwaves (neuro) and reinforcing the change.* The brain self-regulates in order to calm the nervous system and reduce symptoms. Without this self-regulation, various issues in the central nervous system can arise including anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. Biofeedback differs from Neurofeedback due to its focus on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a process that involves learning how to control one’s bodily functions like breath, heart rate, or skin temperature. During the process, our patients are connected to electrical sensors that measure and give information (feedback) about the body (bio). This enables you to record and learn to control subtle changes like relaxing your muscles or reducing stress. It is different from neurofeedback due to the control of one’s autonomic functions. Control over your body can lead to an improvement of health.*

What is QEEG?

A QEEG, quantitative electroencephalogram, brain map measures electrical patterns on the very surface of the scalp that signal cortical activity. A quantitative EEG provides a computer analysis of the EEG data. This EEG data is compared to a reference database of a standard set based on other people’s EEG. Certain patterns can represent issues like depression, anxiety and much more. The QEEG is used both for treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback involves assisting a person with learning how to modify their own brainwave activity. Using computers enables us to monitor brain functioning then show that live feedback to the client. We teach our Branford clients how to promote or reduce different brainwave frequencies, then reward the brain for altering its own activity to produce more appropriate patterns. This reinforcement causes new electrical activity to begin in the brain, and shaping brainwave activity toward a more desirable, more regulated performance. These changes cause symptom reduction, as the brain learns to self-regulate.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

In the first step of the process we conduct a QEEG Brain Map; during this procedure, EEG activity is recorded and statistically analyzed. You will then review your brain map and make a treatment plan with Dr. Roseann. Once a protocol is designed, you are immediately able to begin your Neurofeedback sessions.  The number of sessions required are different for each individual, but range from 20 to 100 or more sessions.* The average individual from Branford comes in twice a week. A session consists of the placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while achieving brainwave reinforcement as you watch a movie.
