What is Neurofeedback?

The practice of using maps of brainwaves (neuro) and the information they provide (feedback) to reinforce positive activity is called Neurofeedback, a non-invasive and safe treatment option.* A significant decrease in symptoms can occur when the brain learns to self-regulate and calm the nervous system. Anxiety, depression, even physical symptoms and other central nervous problems can occur without proper regulation. Biofeedback, as opposed to Neurofeedback, can instead target specific autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a technique that involves trying to consciously control a person’s bodily functions such as breath, heart rate, or skin temperature as a form of therapy. The process involves monitoring the body (bio) through electrical sensors and receiving the information (feedback) to record and study the changes in brain activity. The end goal is to learn how to control and subtly change these functions. Dissimilar from Neurofeedback, Biofeedback focuses on utilizing the body’s autonomic functions to facilitate greater control over a patient’s body, leading to improvement in their overall health.*

What is QEEG?

A quantitative electroencephalogram, or QEEG, is basically a map of electrical patterns of the brain based on the cortical activity on the surface of the scalp. A quantitative EEG (QEEG) is actually a process that analyzes EEG data using a computer. A standard data set within a reference database of other EEGs will be used to compare against your own. These maps can be used to observe patterns that can indicate anxiety, depression, or other disorders. Your QEEG data can be used for both treatment planning and progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is a process to teach your brain to self-regulate brainwave activities. We provide live feedback to all of our clients as we monitor brain functions through the use of computers. The brain is rewarded, utilizing the analyzed feedback, to help promote or reduce certain brainwave frequencies in an effort to train the brain to monitor itself and exhibit more appropriate patterns. This reinforcement actually creates new electrical activity in the brain while the brainwave activity is “shaped” into more regulated and desirable performance. When these changes in activity happen, it can often lead to a reduction in symptoms as the brain trains itself how to self-regulate.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step in the process involves a QEEG Brain Map, a safe procedure used to record and statistically analyze your EEG activity. Dr. Roseann is available to meet with you for a review of your brain map and a discussion on the best treatment plan moving forward. You can begin your Neurofeedback sessions as soon as immediately after the development of the protocol.Every individual has a different number of recommended sessions, but the range can often be anywhere between 20 to 100 or more sessions.* On average, most of the patients in the Bethlehem area come to our office twice a week. Dr. Roseann designs customized treatments personally suited for each of patients. No one solution applies to every situation, so an in-depth review of the test results is necessary for every patient. Brainwave reinforcement is provided when you attend a session. Your brain’s activity is monitored through the use of sensors on the scalp and ears while you watch a movie.
