What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a treatment that focuses on studying the information of brainwaves and reinforcing the new desired change.* This method is completely safe, focusing on a non-invasive form of treatment for the body and mind. The name stems from the focus of studying information (feedback) of the brainwaves (neuro), as this method helps us understand the self-regulation of the brain. The brain can calm the nervous system and diminish symptoms of a condition. If there is no self-regulation, symptoms increase and central nervous problems can occur, such as anxiety, depression, and various physical symptoms. Neurofeedback places a stronger emphasis on the brain and nervous system.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is another method used to help better understand the mind and body. Biofeedback focuses particularly on the process on controlling bodily functions, like breathing, heart rate, and skin temperature. The process included connecting patients to electrical sensors to measure the body (bio) and receive more information (feedback). This helps us better understand the subtle changes that can occur, such as reducing stress and the relaxing of muscles. It places a strong emphasis on the control of autonomic functions, rather than the brain. Establishing power of one’s body in an impactful way to improve health.*

What is QEEG?

QEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalogram. That means a map of the brain to measure electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp. This reflects cortical activity. EEG data is used to compare a reference database of a standard set to other people’s EEG. We are then able to gather a quantitative EEG, which is a computer analysis of this EEG data. It helps us recognize specific patterns that signify signs of depression, anxiety, and other conditions. A QEEG helps with both treatment planning and a patient’s progress.*

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback is the process of helping an individual modify and better control their personal brainwave activity. Our methods use the power of computers to track brain functioning and share live feedback with the patient. We help every client work to improve their condition. Whether that is promoting or reducing different brainwave frequencies, we are able to reward the brain for the change. This enables it to produce more desired brainwave patterns. This reinforcement creates new electrical activity that is produced in the bran. The specific frequencies are molded to a more desirable and more controlled level. This self-regulation of the brain promotes a reduction of condition symptoms.

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The process of Neurofeedback begins with a QEEG brain map. This procedure records and statistically analyzes your EEG activity. Once the QEEG is complete, Dr. Roseann will review the brain map with you. A specific treatment plan is developed for you and a protocol is established. You can then begin your Neurofeedback sessions. Since each condition and patient is different, the number of lessons can range anywhere from 20 to 100 sessions, even more if necessary*. Our Bethany patients generally visit two times per week. A session typically consists of placing sensors on the ears and scalp. This helps observe and regulate the brainwave reinforcement while you watch a movie.

How Do I Get Started with Neuro/BioFeedback?

How Do You Know Which Therapy I Need?

Dr. Roseann personally analyzes and interprets your QEEG to provide you with accurate results. She will sit down with you to review the results and provide certain recommendations for treatment. The QEEG results and additional intake will help determine what therapies are best for you.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

Progress is monitored in three primary ways:

  • QEEGs performed at scheduled intervals to observe brain functioning.
  • Data and information collected from every session.
  • Customized symptom checklist designed for monitored progress.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

There are several harmful and potentially dangerous treatment methods. Neurofeedback is a safe therapy that avoids the use of drugs and other perscriptions. It helps alleviate symptoms for several conditions impacting both children and adults. Thousands of research studies have been conducted in the past 40 years that support its methods. The American Academy of Pediatrics gave it a Level 1 effectiveness rating in 2013 for its impact on ADHD. Level 1 is the same level of effectiveness as medication.*
