What is Neurofeedback?

One of the therapies that we have in the Armonk area is Neurofeedback therapy. This type of therapy is a non-invasive form of treatment. During the process, a practitioner studies the information (feedback) of the brainwaves (neuro) and reinforces the change.* In order to diminish the symptoms, the brain self-regulates to calm the nervous system. Central nervous problems can arise if the brain does not self-regulate such as anxiety, depression, and even physical symptoms. If you are wondering if the Neurofeedback therapy does work, we can say that around 90% of our neurofeedback patients have had significant change or symptom reduction since going under this type of therapy. Although this kind of therapy has positive results for most patients, we don’t guarantee that this type of therapy does work for everyone. On the other hand, Biofeedback is different because it focuses on autonomic functions.

What is Biofeedback?

At our office serving Armonk, we also provide Biofeedback therapy as well. In the process of Biofeedback, we learn to control the client’s bodily functions such as the breath, heart rate, and skin temperature. Our Armonk practitioners connect electrical sensors to the clients to measure and provide informational feedback about the body (bio). This information allows the ability to record and take control of subtle changes such as relaxing the muscles or reducing stress. This type of therapy is different from neurofeedback because it deals with controlling one’s autonomic functions. Allowing the control of one’s body can improve the health of them*

What is QEEG?

Quantitative electroencephalogram, also known as a QEEG is a type of brain map that deals with measuring the electrical patterns of the surface of the scalp. These types of patterns reflect cortical activity. A computer analysis of the EEG data is a quantitative EEG. With the EEG data, it is compared to the reference database of someone else’s standard set of EEG. Certain patterns can be symptoms of depression, anxiety, and much more. With the QEEG, it can be used for both treatment planning and progress.* Dr. Roseann will sit with you to review the results and discuss about any solutions best for you. With the results of your QEEG and clinical intake, she will decide what treatment will work best. Contact our office serving Armonk for any questions or concerns!

As an educator myself, I had seen several of my students make positive and often dramatic changes after going to Dr. Roseann’s center. When my son started having problems at school paying attention, I knew that my husband and I wanted Dr. Roseann’s experienced care. She was spot on in diagnosing the issues with the brain map and walked us through the step by step process of what we needed to do. Our son and family have benefited so much from the center’s help. He never needed medication and with neurofeedback and dietary changes, he became the best person he could be. It has been several years and my son is now thriving in college.

As a therapist myself, I knew that Dr. Roseann is one of the top mental health experts on PANS/PANDAS and Lyme Disease. So when I became sick, she was the first person I called for help. She was able to connect me with the right Lyme medical experts so I could get treatment. I was very lucky that the biofeedback and BRT at the center started helping my headaches and anxiety immediately. I am about 90 percent better and I wouldn’t be feeling so great if it weren't for Dr. Roseann.

After my son with ADHD and anxiety had terrible reactions to medications, we went to Dr. Roseann on the recommendation of our pediatrician. She helped us to understand why his brain and body was reacting to medication and why he was experiencing anxiety, focus, and impulse control issues. After 10 years of many therapists and psychiatrists, we finally saw some major change in on our son with neurofeedback, BRT, and counseling. His therapist helped him and us improve his executive functioning and alertness. It was scary to see him suffer so much on ADHS medications and I am so glad he is happy and our home life isn’t so stressful.

As a family highly impacted by the 12-14 tragedy in Sandy Hook, Dr. Roseann and staff has given us help over the years. From learning how to use EFT/Tapping to manage our anxiety to neurofeedback, everyone in our family has been helped. We learned so much about how trauma impacts the brain and the neuroscience part of stress, anxiety, and trauma. When confronted with such stress, you can’t imagine things will get better, but they did with their help.

As a physician, I knew exactly where to take my son for the best possible mental health care. My son was so anxious from an undiagnosed learning disability and a poor school program. Dr. Roseann evaluated my son and gave us recommendations that were so specific, we could after many years of pushing and prodding the school, finally get him the right program at school. Her center was able to provide all the therapies he needed to improve his cognitive processing speed and reduce anxiety with the highest level of clinical care.

Our adult daughter had treatment resistant depression and was suffering when we came to Dr. Roseann’s center. Even though other therapists had turned us away, her team supported our daughter in a way that we had never experienced. With intensive counseling and neurofeedback, she was able to not be anxious for the first time in her life and her depression stopped.

Our time with Dr. Roseann and her staff during our 360 Reboot intensive therapies program was special. Our little guy gained so many skills in a short time and we received so much education about his needs and what we needed to do along the developmental spectrum to keep him growing in the right direction. We wish we had found her center sooner!

Dr. Roseann treated my ADHD when I was a teenager after my parents tried medications for years on me. I hated every minute of those medications and I felt so irritated all the time. After about 18 sessions, it was like my brain shifted and I woke up from a fog. It has been 6 years since I finished neurofeedback and my attention is awesome!

You have accomplished wonders for my grandson. He is now the child he was always meant to be. Your program was the best investment in his life. I worked with so many young college students who struggled with ADHD and I did not want to see that happen to him. I am so happy that he has been able to benefit from the program. I tell everyone with a child who has attention issues that your program works wonders.

Common Neurofeedback & Biofeedback Questions:

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback assists a person in learning how to modify their own brainwave activity. We monitor brain function and show live feedback to our clients through the use of computers. We utilize them to reduce or promote different brainwave frequencies and reward the brain when it changes its own activity to promote more appropriate patterns. New electrical activity is actually formed in the brain through this reinforcement and the brainwave activity is “shaped” into more regulated and desirable performance. As the brain learns to self-regulate, the changes in activity result in symptom reduction.*

What Does the Neurofeedback Process Involve?

The first step is to create a QEEG Brain Map, a procedure that records and statistically analyzes EEG activity. At your meeting with Dr. Roseann, you will review the brain map and make a treatment plan together. You can immediately start your Neurofeedback sessions once a protocol is designed. The necessary number of sessions varies based on the individual, but usually range between 20 to 100 or more sessions.* Most patients in Armonk come in twice a week. A typical session generally includes placement of sensors on the scalp and ears while watching a movie, all while getting brainwave reinforcement.

How Do You Monitor Progress?

There are three ways we monitor progress:

  • Through QEEGs at regular intervals to objectively look at brain functioning.
  • Through data collection at every Neurofeedback session.
  • Through regular customized symptom checklist progress monitoring.

Is the Therapy Supported by Research?

For many conditions affecting children and adults, Neurofeedback can be a safe, drug-free treatment alternative. Over more than 40 years, there have been thousands of research studies supporting its efficacy. The American Academy of Pediatrics gave its treatment of ADHD a Level 1 rating, essentially the same effectiveness as medication.*
